'Sister Wives' Season 8 Air Date, Rumors News, Updates: Brown Family Appeals Provision in Utah's Polygamy Law; TLC in Doubt, Series in a Limbo?
TLC's "Sister Wives" is currently in a limbo as the network hasn't announced its renewal yet, prompting several reports that the reality television series has already been cancelled. Kody Brown is allegedly seeking two more wives, prompting a threat from three of his four wives that they will divorce him should he do that.
However, Kody Brown is determined to keep his wives and his show as he moved to appeal their case for legalizing polygamy, Yahoo reported. The "Sister Wives" stars are urging the court to review a decision that upheld Utah's polygamy law, which bans cohabitation with other partners while they are legally married to someone.
Their latest legal battle followed after the appeals court decided in April that they weren't charged under the Utah law. This overturned a previous ruling in favor of the "Sister Wives" family, wherein a lower court ruled the law violated polygamists' right to privacy and religious freedom.
Legal battles
If you aren't up to speed with the show, "Sister Wives" documents the polygamous family of Kody Brown in Utah. Like most polygamous families, he's legally married to one wife, Robyn, and spiritually married to three others: Meri, Christine and Janelle.
According to the Browns, the Utah law has a "chilling effect" on polygamist families who seek protection against "government abuse" and "religious inequality." Since the "Sister Wives" debut in 2010, local authorities had opened an investigation against the Browns, prompting them to leave Lehi, Utah, in 2011. They have since resided in Las Vegas, while the family attorney, Jonathan Turney, had called the investigation as tantamount to government abuse.
'Sister Wives' future
Reports speculated that this latest legal battle stemmed from the bleak future of "Sister Wives" Season 8. Life & Style previously reported that three of Kody Brown's wives are threatening to quit the show as Kody Brown expressed his desire to take two more wives. Ecumenical News, on the other hand, suggested that the legal move may have been to appease his wives.
So far, TLC has yet to announce the renewal of "Sister Wives" Season 8. However, with this latest development, the Browns' efforts to promote polygamists' freedom could appeal to viewers. "Sister Wives" Season 8 could even depict their legal struggles on television and dramatize their efforts.
Will their legal move be enough to save the show from greenlight limbo? The odds are long, especially since the US Supreme Court only hears less than one percent of the 7,500+ cases appealed annually, AP reported. But maybe the tide will turn for the "Sister Wives" family!
