Detroit Pistons NBA 2015 News, Rumors: Stan Van Gundy Continues to Shake Up Roster
Stan Van Gundy has been on the job for nine months now as President of the Detroit Pistons and the team's head coach. In that short amount of time, he has turned over almost all of the entire Pistons roster. 10 new faces are in the mix, and 10 other players have been let go, most infamously Josh Smith, who was outright released in December. The team responded and has clawed its way out of the basement to being a few games out of the eighth seed in the East.
Only four players from the previous regime are still on the roster. Andre Drummond, Greg Monroe, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and the injured Brandon Jennings. It was that injury that likely inspired Van Gundy to make a bigger than expected move for guard Reggie Jackson. Even though Jackson will be a restricted free agent and will need a substantial offer to stay, the Pistons get the balance of this season to see what he's got in him.
Van Gundy has had a big challenge to deal with when he assumed control of the Pistons. The team had a number of bad contracts and mismatched talent on the floor that had no chemistry. There was also a revolving door at the head coaching position. Now the roster has been turned over and Van Gundy can use the rest of the 2014-15 season to evaluate the pieces he has and see which way he wants to go heading into next season.
The acquisition of Jackson has been met with mixed reviews, it is more about fresh faces and the pieces needed to build a contender. The Pistons were in such poor shape that any moves can be viewed as positive as the franchise looks to creep its way out of the stagnation it had been caught in for years.
