'Star' Season 2 Renewal, News Details: Show Gets Another Full Season with 13 Episodes
FOX's musical series, "Star," has been renewed for a second season with 13 episodes lined up like its first installment.
Following the story of a girl group based in Atlanta, "Star" is still airing its first season, which has around three more episodes left before it ends.
The show was created by Lee Daniels and Tom Donaghy, with Charles Murray as its showrunner until September when he dropped out of the project and was replaced by Chuck Pratt.
"Star" shares the story of three ladies, Star Davis (Jude Demorest), Simone Davis (Brittany O'Grady) and Alex Crane (Ryan Destiny), who formed a girl group due to their aspirations of becoming big musical stars.
"Lee Daniels is a true visionary and he and Tom Donaghy have delivered a series with a unique and meaningful point of view," FOX entertainment president David Madden said in a statement.
The show is reminiscent of FOX's music-industry inspired family drama, "Empire," which features many original songs specifically produced for the series.
Queen Latifah also stars in the show as Carlotta Brown, the group's "adoptive" mother who looks after their rising musical careers by referring them to a trusted talent agent, Jahil Rivera (Benjamin Bratt).
"Our incredible cast, led by Queen Latifah and Benjamin Bratt, instantly infused their characters with tremendous depth and passion, and the show has proved to be both powerful and really entertaining," Madden adds in the statement.
Like "Empire," the show is also known to feature famous artists such as Lenny Kravitz, Missy Elliott, Big Boi, and even Michael Jackson's daughter, Paris.
The show garnered an average of more than seven million viewers across all platforms - with a 2.2 rating during its opening month.
"Stars" airs every Wednesday, 9 p.m. EST on FOX, and the last episode for its first season will air on March 15, days before "Empire" returns for its spring premiere on the 22nd.
