'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' News, Release Date: Mark Hamill Says Luke Skywalker Isn't Completely Turning to the Dark Side
"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" star Mark Hamill recently clarified an important aspect of his character in the upcoming film. According to the actor, it's not true that his character, Luke Skywalker, will completely leave his old ways behind to turn to the dark side.
The promo materials for "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" heavily focus on Luke's internal struggle between the two opposing forces, causing many fans to speculate that he might finally turn his back on the light and go to the dark side when the new film picks up. Hamill, however, revealed in an interview earlier this week that Luke is simply bothered by some of the bad choices he's made in the past, stripping him of his faith in himself.
"In 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens,' Like has lost confidence in his ability to make good choices. It haunts him to the core. But he hasn't gone to the dark side. This isn't an evil version of him. But it's still an incarnation of the character I never expected. It has pulled me out of my comfort zone. It's a real challenge," explained Hamill.
Hamill explained that in spite of all the ghosts he's been trying to ward off, his personality is basically unchanged — he's still good. However, he said his life experiences have shaped his perspective in the same way other people's experiences change their outlooks in life. He also said that although it's time for Luke to get rid of the Jedi in him and his old ways, that doesn't mean abandoning the good human being in him.
The speculations about Luke's possible betrayal of his old ways began because of a line in one of the teasers for "Star Wars: The Last Jedi." There, Luke said, "It's time for the Jedi to end," prompting fans to theorize about his descent into the dark side.
"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" hits theaters on Dec. 15.
