'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' News, Spoilers: J.J. Abrams Already Has a Story for 'Star Wars: Episode IX'
"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" has just opened in theaters, but Director J.J. Abrams has already pitched a story for the next movie in the franchise. Last weekend, the renowned filmmaker pitched his "Star Wars: Episode IX" story to the executives of Lucasfilm, getting "Star Wars" fans even more excited for the third and final installment.
A couple of months ago, Lucasfilm announced that original "Star Wars: Episode IX" director Colin Trevorrow would be replaced by Abrams, who directed "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Since production for the movie is scheduled to begin in June 2018, Abrams and his co-writer Chris Terrio are already forging ahead on their screenplay and ironing out their treatment of the sequel.
"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" has offered multiple surprises for fans, including Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) being the new Supreme Leader of the First Order, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) sacrificing himself to save his friends and the surviving group of freedom fighters rebuilding a Rebellion. Although the movie does not have an immediate cliffhanger, it is quite interesting how Abrams will continue and conclude the narrative in "Star Wars: Episode IX."
Following the "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" screening on Dec. 14, "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" director Rian Johnson was asked how Abrams might possibly continue the saga, considering how his movie ended. "I can't speak to what they're going to do. And there's always, in these movies, a question of 'a certain point of view' ... But for me, in that moment, Kylo believes it's the truth. ... I don't think he's purely playing chess. I think that's what he saw when they touched fingers and that's what he believes. And when he tells her that in that moment, she believes it," he said.
It remains to be seen how Abrams will wrap up the current trilogy, but considering his work on "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," it is safe to assume that "Star Wars: Episode IX" is in good hands.
"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" is now showing in theaters. "Star Wars: Episode IX" is expected to hit theaters on Dec. 20, 2019.
