'Stranger Things' Season 3 News, Premiere Date: New Season to Start with a Clean Slate

"Stranger Things" has been confirmed to return for another season, and it is already shaping up to be the most mysterious yet. Although the next season does not have a definite premiere date as of writing, Levy said the direction of the third season is already clear, and new scripts are already in place.

The announcement of a season 3 shouldn't come as a surprise for fans, considering "Stranger Things'" large and strong fan base and high viewership ratings. Created by the Duffer Brothers, "Stranger Things" is one of Netflix's most successful series today. Just recently, the premiere episode of season 2 was found to be the most-talked-about series premiere on Twitter, beating the records of other popular series premieres like "The Walking Dead" and "Game of Thrones."

Since the producer of the series confirmed that "Stranger Things" would return for season 3, speculations about the plot of the next installment are already rife. According to series creator Matt Duffer, the plot of the new season will not feature a seamless transition from the previous finale, and it might pick up well past the closing shot of season 2. "Even if we wanted to hop into the action faster, we couldn't. Our kids are aging," said Duffer, referring to the cast members of the series who are now mostly teens.

Duffer also said in a separate interview that the intention was to close season 2 with a feeling of dread and not with a promise or hint of what's yet to come in season 3. "Last year, we had a lot of cliffhangers at the end of the season. We didn't want to do that again. We didn't want to box ourselves in for season 3," he said, adding that season 3 would start with a clean slate.

Filming for season 3 is expected to kick off early next year. The new series will likely premiere in late 2018.
