Tesla Model 3 to Begin Mass Production in July; Information on Model Y Won't Be Available Until 2018
In the next few months to come, Tesla will be working around the clock as it attempts to meet its ambitious deadline in rolling out units of the Model 3. If everything goes as planned, mass production for the Model 3 will commence in July and initial units of the upcoming Tesla car model will be released before the end of the year.
However, according to BGR, Tesla's plans to dominate the electronic vehicle market extends far beyond the previous Model S, Model X and the upcoming Model 3. Tesla's CEO Elon Musk previously hinted that a Tesla truck will be designed in the foreseeable future.
However, the next vehicle the company has lined up for development might possibly be a crossover version of the Model 3. This Tesla car will be dubbed the Model Y and it would be a smaller and more affordable electric SUV.
Musk first confirmed the existence of the Model Y on Twitter back in late 2015. Moreover, the car model was also a part of a presentation by Tesla chief technical officer JB Straubel a few years ago. However, since then, very little information about the Tesla Model Y has been available.
That is, until this Friday, March 31, when Musk revealed via Twitter that the Model Y is indeed happening and that more details about the electric car model will be made available soon.
Ars Technica sent a private message to Musk on Twitter about the Model Y and asked if any information would be announced in the near future. Musk simply replied, "Next Week."
However, it turns out Musk was actually referring to incoming information about Neuralink, his recently announced company which aims to link humans with computers. The news outlet later clarified that information on the Model Y is not expected to be revealed until 2018.
With the Model Y still a few years away from production, Tesla is currently focused on the mass production of the Model 3 which is set to kick off this July.
