'The Fosters' Season 5B News: Winter Premiere Date Set for Early 2018
Fans will have to wait a little longer for the return of "The Fosters" season 5.
Freeform has announced the show's winter premiere date, according to reports. "The Fosters" season 5B will debut in January 2018, four months after the massive season 5A cliffhanger aired.
In the back half of season 5, AJ (Tom Williamson) and Callie (Maia Mitchell) managed to sneak Ximena (Lisseth Chavez) inside a church and hide her from the ICE agents attempting to deport her for joining a protest at her school. Blue and red lights flashed outside the church as the three of them were locked inside. They all agreed to wait it out until they could take Ximena home to be with her family.
For its new batch of episodes, "The Fosters" will continue to focus on storylines about immigration and the transgender community.
"The Fosters has never shied away from tackling important social issues like immigration rights, LGBTQ rights, and adoption rights," executive producer Joanna Johnson said in a press statement. "We will continue to tell those important stories this season for those who too often are not heard."
The first photo from the winter premiere hints Callie and AJ's fight is far from over. Aside from Ximena's problem, the new season will also feature the end of Callie's senior year in high school. However, it looks like her latest mixup with the authorities may turn into another obstacle that keeps her from fulfilling her college dreams.
Johnson told TVLine last month that Callie is still not decided on whether she wants to be an activist or just focus on her personal journey. Aaron (Elliot Fletcher) sees how she really cares for others, but Callie must figure out what she really wants to be. "The question is: How can she do that in a way that is not self-destructive?" said the EP.
The second half of "The Fosters" season 5 premieres Tuesday, Jan. 9, at 8 p.m. EDT on Freeform.
