'The Jump' Sees Seven Contestants Leave Third Season as Channel 4 Launches Safety Review
Following the tragic accident that Beth Tweddle fell into on Saturday, Channel 4 has reportedly asked for producers of "The Jump" to review its safety procedures.
The Olympic bronze medalist fell during training and was airlifted to a hospital in Austria. She then went through surgery on her back and has announced that she will be pulling off from the reality show.
Now on its third season, the series has seen seven contestants leave, with only five remaining to complete the entire season. However, some speculate that one or two more might decide to pull out after witnessing the fate of the other contenders who suffered injuries.
According to CNN, a spokesperson for the network said they have requested for safety procedures to be reviewed after the increasing number of injured contestants in the season. "All winter sports carry some element of risk but in light of the number of injuries this year, Channel 4 has asked the producers to review safety procedures again to further reduce the prospect of accident," the spokesperson explained.
Before Tweddle announced her departure, Olympic swimming champ Rebecca Adlington declared that she won't be completing the third season. The news came after she dislocated a shoulder while trying to accomplish a ski-jump, and to her, the experience was even "worse than childbirth."
In defense of the show, the network's representative noted that 46 celebrities have emerged from the show victorious without having to suffer the same fate that Tweddle, Adlington, and other contestants did.
However, not everyone is pleased with the show. According to The Guardian, an insider called the series "the most dangerous show on television." Aside from the concerned source, 12 people have reportedly submitted official complaints against the show.
At the moment, it is unclear how the network will respond to the complaints, but it is expected that safety assessments will continue on the new tracks that caused the largest number of injuries in the history of "The Jump."
