'The Leftovers' Season 3 Spoilers and Updates: Possible Time Jump Happening Next Season; Could Series Finale Explore 'The Rapture'?

A big time leap awaits fans of HBO's acclaimed rapture television series, "The Leftovers," for its third and final season, marking a departure from the previous seasons' format.

Showrunner Damon Lindelof has decided to take Season 3 as his final bow, as had been previously reported. This means that we might finally get the answers to loose ends left in the season finale: what caused the Grand Departure, and how does Kevin Sr., who communicates with dead people, come in all of this?

"The Leftovers" cast and crew are currently filming in Australia, after having Season 1 in New York (Mapletown) and Season 2 in Texas (Jarden). Producers remained mum as to the importance of the Land Down Under for its upcoming season, though they hinted that Kevin Garvey may have something to do with it.

But what of the time jump? Fan theories suggest that the series may be up to something huge, following a post from The Leftovers star Carrie Coon is shooting at Cape Tribulation, Australia. The site could be a prelude to the Great Tribulation, which had been discussed in the Bible as the Rapture, the final cataclysmic event that ends the world. Could "The Leftovers" be really headed towards such a disastrous end?

How Australia comes into play

Come to think of it, Australia is actually oft-referenced in the show. Previously, writer consultant Reza Aslan discussed the importance of Australia for the show, which is associated with ancient spiritual power. Kevin Garvey Sr., who considers himself a sort of shaman for his uncanny ability to communicate with the dead, will find himself among good company, as Australia is home to some of the oldest shaman traditions in the world.

What we do know for sure, however, is that nearly everyone from the main cast will return for "The Leftovers'" swan song, including Amy Brenneman, Christopher Eccleston, Liv Tyler, Margaret Qualley; as well as the Murphy Family, played by Regina King, Kevin Caroll, Jovan Adepo, and Jasmin Brown. Meanwhile, Scott Glenn will be promoted to series regular as Kevin Garvey Sr. The last season is also going to have eight episodes instead of its usual 10.

Recap of Season 2 finale

Fans would recall that in "The Leftovers" Season 2 finale, the three girls who disappeared in the season premiere, resurfaced to reveal that they were part of the Guilty Remnant, under the thumb of Meg Abbott (Liv Tyler). They were hell-bent on sowing fear into the world's only safe place.

Meanwhile, Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux) has come back from the dead for the second time, returning to the arms of Nora Durst (Carrie Coon) and finally exorcising his demons, which came in the form of Patti Levin (Ann Dowd).

Top-billed by Justin Theroux, the show follows a community after a portion of its population disappeared. Unfortunately, though, Lindelof has already explained that the show would never explain what happened to the lost two percent of the population, as it's an essential mystery to the show.

"The Leftovers" will return for its final season in summer 2017.
