'The Lego Movie 2 Release Date, Plot Rumors: Storyline Leaks Emerge?
"The Lego Movie" was the surprise hit of 2014. The first-ever, full-length theatrical LEGO adventure film was a critical and commercial success, and it earned more than $460 million worldwide.
Fans of the movie called for a sequel, and Warner Bros. is doing more than that. Aside from "The Lego Movie 2," there will also be "The Lego Batman Movie," which is a result of the popularity of the character from the first movie. Moreover, there will be a "Ninjago" movie in the works.
"Lego Movie" and "Jump Street" directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller sat down with Empire to talk about the movie's sequel and spin-offs. Miller said there will be a time jump, and "The Lego Movie 2" will take place four years after the events of the first film.
"Well, I don't want to give you spoilers but we were really interested in what happens to that boy who's in the meta story in the first movie when he's four years older. When he's an adolescent, how does that change his point of view?" he said.
"And it's nice to have the characters start in a different place from the first movie. Emmet, for example, was in an existential crisis of having seen another dimension and was questioning the point of his existence," added Miller.
Though Miller and Lord will be writing the sequel, they will be turning over the director's chair to someone else.
"I think it's nice for all these other films to have their own voice and that's what's neat about working with other filmmakers," said Lord. "They come up with solutions you wouldn't think of. Watching Charlie Bean's sequences for Ninjago is so gratifying because he's able to make it play without any dialogue and has a really great visual style. It's really nice and refreshing. I think if would be boring if we directed them all, honestly."
"Ninjago" will hit cinemas on Oct. 14, 2016, "The Lego Batman Movie" will come out Feb. 10, 2017, and "The Lego Movie 2" is set for a 2018 release.
