'This Is Us' Finale Episode Pushed Back; Creator Explains the Ultimate Test of Rebecca and Jack's Marriage
NBC's newly popular family drama, "This Is Us," is about to air their finale episode on March 7. However, due to U.S. President Donald Trump's speech, the episode's airing will be pushed back to March 14 at its usual time slot, 9 p.m. EST on NBC.
President Trump's first address for the joint session of Congress will be aired by the network on Feb. 28, resulting to several schedule adjustments for the NBC network, affecting many shows such as the premiere of "Trial and Error," "Chicago of Justice," and as mentioned, the finale of "This Is Us."
To recap, the last episode of "This Is Us" showed a roller coaster emotional ride - from Jack's (Milo Ventimiglia) funeral, then flashing back to the time when Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Jack exchanged their vows at a courthouse, with Miguel (Jon Huertas) giving the newly-wed couple a lovely speech.
Viewers also got to see the blissful moments of Rebecca and Jack's marriage, but not for long. As Jack is caught up with work and Rebecca is busy trying to relive her days as a musician, the marriage goes dry after all the responsibilities, kids and life in general.
When the couple received the news that Miguel and Shelly (Wynn Everett) were getting divorced, the two however tried to rekindle the fire back in their marriage in an effort to keep the same thing from happening to their own relationship. Everything seems to be going well, until Rebecca told Jack that she wants to go on a five-state tour with her bandmate, Ben (Sam Trammell).
The unsettling turn was explained by "This Is Us" creator Dan Fogelman. "There's been hints even from this start of the episode that this is the part where their marriage is most tested," he reveals through an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Furthermore Fogelman clarified that the obstacle of Rebecca and Jack's marriage is not Ben per se, but it is life itself, "and our greatest weaknesses and greatest flaws."
"Ben is the representation for Rebecca of a life not lived, a life she gave up, and willingly gave up to take care of her family. So that's where we live more," Fogelman adds. "It's the core human stuff, the sacrifices that people make in marriage and life and raising a family; what they sometimes feel is a lack of appreciation for such sacrifice, on both sides."
