In the game, the player takes on the role of a special operations agent in a group called the "Strategic Homeland Division (SHD)" or "The Division" for short. The group was established in order to combat any threats brought about by the outbreak.

"The Division agents are trained to operate independently of command, as all else fails. Fighting to prevent the fall of society, the agents will find themselves caught up in an epic conspiracy to combat not only the effects of a manmade virus, but also the rising threat of those behind it," Ubisoft describes.

The game is exclusively multiplayer where gamers will have to team up with friends or other players in order to fight the chaos. Since the game is strictly multiplayer, players will not only find themselves engaging in cooperative multiplayer but also in player-versus-player battles (PVP) as well.

The game is also reportedly going to take place in New York City, specifically Brooklyn and Manhattan and it is unknown on whether more explorable locations will be announced.
