'Transparent' Season 4 Spoilers: the Pfeffermans Travel to Israel, Meet New Family
Now in its fourth season, "Transparent" takes viewers to Israel where the Pfeffermans meet more members of the family, and as per usual, they have no trouble settling into their usual dysfunctional dynamic.
In "I Never Promised You a Promised Land," the Pfeffermans meet members from another branch of their family, who seem to be a better version of themselves. Sarah (Amy Landecker) tells her siblings that "Team Two" is composed of younger, more successful, and happier members.
Though the family's drama regularly makes for a beautiful mess, it is also one of the show's weaknesses. The series revolves around the family's personal problems, and by now fans understand how each of the Pfeffermans operates. Although there is so much to tell, the show's need to revisit these themes and stories is why it often fails to incorporate new characters and tell new stories.
"Transparent" may introduce new personalities, deeper storylines, and more diverse perspectives, most of the time they end up being dropped. And then the show reverts to the usual Pfeffermans drama.
The show even tried to explore new perspectives on trans experience, as witnessed in "Born Again," which pretty much was composed of flashback to the '80s. In some of these scenes, viewers get to see how Maura's (Jeffrey Tambor) life as Mort went, while she was still trying to figure out who she is and what she truly wants in life. Another set of flashbacks were from Davina's (Alexander Billings) life in the '80s as she was trying to figure out being queer.
The narratives are heart-wrenching, powerful, and beautiful, they often do not fit into the Pfefferman saga.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Amazon's Emmy award-winning show raked in fewer than 1 million views. This comes as a big deal for the studio given that they went home empty-handed at the Primetime Emmy Awards, whereas their competition Hulu and Netflix got multiple wins.
"Transparent" season 4 is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
