UFC 195 Preview: Robbie Lawler Defends Welterweight Strap For The Second Time Against Carlos Condit
This weekend's UFC 195 card will be headlined by a welterweight title showdown that is expected to be a barnburner.
170-pound king Robbie Lawler (26-10, and one no contest, with 21 victories by stoppage), will be defending his title for the second time against former interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit (30-8, with 18 victories by stoppage).
The event will be held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. "Ruthless" and "The Natural Born Killer" were originally scheduled to meet each other in November at UFC 193.
But a thumb injury on the champion forced him out of the fight, and the same match-up was moved to Saturday instead. UFC 195, which originally had female bantamweight fighters Ronda Rousey and Holly Holm headlining the card, was then moved to UFC 193, to replace the original Lawler-Condit match-up.
Lawler currently holds one of the more notable success stories in the UFC in recent memory. Upon his initial entry in the company as a 20-year old fighter back in 2002 at UFC 37, Lawler went on to win the next four of his seven fights.
But given his two straight losses in 2004 alone, the UFC was forced to release Lawler from its roster. For his part, however, Lawler worked his way through victories in different promotions, before being re-signed by the UFC in February 2013.
In 2014, he won the undisputed welterweight title via split decision against Johny Hendricks.
Condit, on the other hand, always had an impressive UFC career, since being signed in 2009. He is currently 7-4 in the UFC, and holds notable victories against former title contenders Nick Diaz and Thiago Alves.
In 2014, Condit suffered an ACL injury during his fight against Tyron Woodley, forcing him out of action for a year. In his comeback fight against Alves in May 2015, Condit put on a dominant performance through a second round TKO victory, via doctor stoppage.
