'Underworld 5' spoilers, plot news: 'Outlander' actor Tobias Menzies as new Lycan leader
It seems that the "Underworld V: Next Generation" is definitely on its way. Since the rumors of Kate Beckinsale signing up to reprise her role in the franchise, not much has really been heard afterward. However, the most recent update is that Tobias Menzies has been officially lined up as the new antagonist.
According to Deadline, Menzies is now set to play a major role in the fifth installment of the franchise. The name of his character is Marius, the new leader of the Lycans, described to be as mysterious. Marius will take the place of Dr. Jacob Lane, played by Stephen Rea, who ran things with the Lycans in 2012's "Underworld Awakening."
Although this is the first time Menzies is appearing in the Underworld movies, it is definitely not his first time to be working with director Anna Foerster, who is the first female director of the franchise. Foerster has worked with the actor when she directed four episodes of Outlander in 2015.
Last year, Beckinsale was reported not to reprise the role of Selene; however, having after some long negotiations, she was finally convinced to do it again. Aside from Menzies, there are currently no other news about fresh characters. However, it is also confirmed that Theo James will be reprising his role as David, the vampire ally of Beckinsale's character, Selene. James will apparently have a more solid appearance in the upcoming movie since many suspects the he will be able to draw in audiences. After his role in Underworld: Awakening, he went to star as the lead male, Four, in the popular movie adaptation of the novel "Divergent."
At this point of the franchise, Selene already has a daughter with her hybrid Lycan/boyfriend Michael Corvin, played by Scott Speedman. His disappearance toward the end of the last movie may come into play in the new one, but nothing is certain yet as plots are kept under lock and key.
Many fans do feel a little surprised with the decision to push through with the fifth installment since the last films have not been exactly box-office hits. Then, again, it seems that the franchise's fanbase is strong enough to trigger another round of the Lycans versus vampire saga.
