'War for the Planet of the Apes' Trailer Shows Two Sides Fighting for Their Own Causes

War rarely ends with an amicable resolution and always produces massive casualties on both sides. In the upcoming 20th Century Fox film "War for the Planet of the Apes," it proves this idea to be very true while unveiling different layers of conflict.

In the latest trailer, Caesar (Andy Serkis) fights only to protect the apes, but after seeing how humans do not heed words, he rallies the apes for one final fight that will dictate who emerges as the dominant species. Unfortunately, there are those who feel they should run while others have sided with the humans, creating another problem.

As for the human race, a remorseless colonel (Woody Harrelson) talks to his men, saying, "There are times when it is necessary to abandon our humanity to save humanity." This only confirms that the two races will be on an all-out war against each other, heralding a bloodstained skirmish.

In a talk with IGN, Serkis shares his thoughts about the latest trailer. "Since the end of 'Dawn,' [Caesar's] been coping with the fact that they are, everybody's at their wit's end. There has been suffering on both sides. The humans are under attack, the apes are under attack, and it's reached a critical point where things are dire," he said.

While it is easy to think that Caesar is on the righteous side given his motivations, that is not necessarily the case. Harrelson points out that the humans also have their reasons for fighting, and it is a matter of seeing things in a different perspective.

"The Colonel has a gang of soldiers who are searching for these apes and intent on killing them, intent on exterminating them with the purpose of saving humanity," Harrelson points out. "So, I think in the Colonel's mind, he's doing a good thing, he's not just a killer."

"War for the Planet of the Apes" arrives in cinemas on July 14, 2017.
