Do Christians Have to Tithe?

One of the Christian doctrines commonly preached about is tithing. Unbelievers accuse pastors of using this Biblical principle to raise money for themselves. But the truth is, contributing financially to the Church is a direct commandment from God that we have to take seriously.

Skeptics would ask that if God is so powerful, why does He need contributions from his followers to do His work? What they don't understand is God is not into the business of making our lives too comfortable that we don't have to work for the things we need to accomplish.

God hates laziness (Proverbs 19:15). When Jesus issued the Great Commission, He was actually commanding his followers to work for it. But not everyone can pack up and leave to go preach the Gospel to the ends of the earth. So the rest of us do our share by providing enough funds to fulfill the duty.

By giving tithes, you allow yourself to be used in the blessing of others. How many orphanages and charities are being supported by church ministries? Through your selflessness, aid beneficiaries don't feel lonely. God's love and blessing are manifested to them through you.

Tithing is one way of showing our loyalty to God. It is a test as Malachi 3:10 put it. Indeed, how can we prove God's generosity without doing our part? Tithing is also our way of service to God. A person who claims to follow Jesus but doesn't tithe is a lazy Christian who's only after the blessings but won't work for it.

Those who are against tithing argue that it is an Old Testament thing. But Jesus demonstrated this concept when He fed the multitude with only five loaves of bread and two fish. He didn't produce food out of nothing. It had to take a boy who sacrificed the little food he had.

If you look at God's work today, the ministries, the mega churches, the television broadcast of church sermons worldwide – all these were a product of our collective tithes and offerings. These projects are more appreciated knowing that you have contributed to their fulfillment.
