Windows 10 Mobile Release Date News: Release Pushed Out To 2016

The latest Windows operating system, Windows 10, has been released for personal computers during the latter part of 2015. While most Windows users were expecting their mobile devices to receive the latest Windows 10 Mobile OS before the end of 2015, Microsoft recently shared disappointing news about the release date of the mobile OS. According to a report in Digital Trends, Microsoft has pushed out the update of Windows 8 and 8.1 mobile OS to early 2016.

The company had previously targeted a December 2015 release, but in a recent statement, Microsoft said, "The Windows 10 Mobile upgrade will begin rolling out early next year to select existing Windows 8 and 8.1 phones." The statement was silent about the exact dates of the rollout as well as the reason for the delayed release.

While the newer Lumia smartphones are coming with Windows 10 Mobile out of the box, the fate of older Lumia phone models is still not certain. When Microsoft failed to announce the update schedule for older Lumia phones, many people were disappointed. Microsoft said that they were working with their mobile operators and Windows Insiders to test the update on the older models.

It looks like the update will be coming from Microsoft directly and not from the mobile carriers. This is because the company believes that providing the update is a service that they can offer together with "security updates, new features and capabilities."

The company earlier shared which of their smartphones will first receive the update. According to the official list, first in line to get the update are the Lumia 430, Lumia 435, Lumia 532, Lumia 540, Lumia 640, Lumia 640XL, Lumia 735, Lumia 830, and Lumia 930, which will "receive a free upgrade when available."

In the meantime, Windows Insiders can get a hold of the Technical Preview for the mobile OS. According to the report, among the changes expected on smartphones include a keyboard positioning feature which is useful for larger phablets. A new notification center will also be made available, as well as quick action settings and design improvements in some of the core Windows apps.
