'Wonder Woman 2' Rumors: Sequel to Move Release Date, Avoid Collision with 'Star Wars: Episode 9'

While "Wonder Woman 2" was announced to arrive at Christmas time in 2019, it is now suspected that the highly anticipated sequel's release date will be moved to summer of 2020 to avoid clashing with "Star Wars: Episode 9."

"Star Wars: Episode 9" was originally slated for a May 2019 release, but with J.J. Abrams now returning to the director's chair, the release of the movie has now been delayed to Dec. 20, 2019. As a Christmastime release almost always equates to strong box-office performance, it can already be said that "Star Wars: Episode 9" will shatter box-office records once more, just like its predecessors.

While the arrival of "Star Wars: Episode 9" at Christmastime 2019 is one great Christmas gift to its loyal followers, its new release date has placed it in direct competition with "Wonder Woman 2," which was earlier announced to arrive on the same date. Because of this, it is now suspected that the sequel to the Gal Gadot blockbuster may abandon the Dec. 20, 2019 release date and move to another date. After all, despite "Wonder Woman" being summer 2017's biggest blockbuster, "Star Wars: Episode 9" may just be too strong for it to battle at the box-office.

Although it is possible for "Wonder Woman 2" to be moved to an earlier date, as Warner Bros has booked an untitled DC movie for November 2019, some opine that it will be better to delay its release to summer 2020 and become that year's biggest summer blockbuster once more. As of this writing, though, Warner Bros has yet to release an official statement whether it will move the showing date of "Wonder Woman 2" to an earlier or later date to avoid collision with "Star Wars: Episode 9."

For now, what is certain about "Wonder Woman 2" is that Patty Jenkins is returning to direct the sequel after it was reported that she and Warner Bros have finally reached agreement on how much her paycheck should be. According to reports, the agreed talent fee makes Jenkins the highest paid female director in Hollywood's history.
