WWE 2016 Rumors: Brock Lesnar to Challenge Kevin Owens for Universal Title? Match Set at Royal Rumble

Kevin Owens is on the rise in WWE and might continue his hot streak until next year's Royal Rumble. At this point, who can stop the Prizefighter in his tracks?

Right now, the top option presents Owens with the toughest of challenges. Brock Lesnar, one of the most controversial characters ever to grace sports entertainment, is rumored to be Owens' next adversary on his quest for WWE supremacy.

Over the past month, Kevin Owens skyrocketed to the top tier of WWE's competitive roster. He won the new Universal Championship, earned the WWE Universe's approval despite becoming Raw's top heel, and defeated Roman Reigns to secure a one-on-one title defense vs. Seth Rollins at Clash of Champions.

During most of his successes, however, Owens always had someone to help him. He won the title when a returning Triple H blindsided Reigns and then Rollins, each with a Pedigree. He also had unexpected help when a returning Rusev aided him in shutting down Reigns. The victory kept The Guy out of a potential triple-threat match for the Universal title at Clash of Champions.

Owens, however, was not even meant to take this role. Sure, he showed during the past weeks that he deserved it, but it was originally Finn Balor's storyline. Balor won the Universal title clean against Seth Rollins at SummerSlam 2016, only to be forced to vacate it the next day. Balor would have to recover from a nasty shoulder injury, and while that happens, KO must keep the title relevant.

With that said, it looks like he will have a chance to prove his dominance as a heel against another "bad" guy - The Beast Incarnate himself.

Owens vs. The Beast

Brock Lesnar, currently the most dominant and destructive force in the WWE ring, made another big mark; this time, a ten-staple cut and a concussion on Randy Orton's head. Lesnar pummeled Orton's skull with multiple elbows during their SummerSlam main event, ending the match with a disappointing finish and a bad injury to Orton.

What's next for Lesnar? Rumor has it that he was already set to challenge Balor for the Universal title at next year's Royal Rumble. With Balor injured and Owens' wearing the belt, should he defend it against Rollins, a Lesnar vs. Owens bout might happen instead.

Another superstar in the conversation for the Rumble title match is Sami Zayn. Zayn, also an NXT alumnus, has had a well-booked feud against KO, defeating the latter twice on two PPVs. After his feud with Chris Jericho, Zayn might be pushed to the top and battle Owens again, this time at the main event.
