Xiaomi Mi 5 Launch Date Confirmed; Rumored Specs Include Snapdragon 820, 5.2-Inch Display, 16 MP Camera

Xiaomi has finally announced the launch date of their upcoming device, the Mi 5. According to Hindustan Times, the long rumored flagship device of the Chinese smartphone manufacturer is coming next month. 

It was already previously revealed that Xiaomi co-founder and VP Liwan Jiang had confirmed the Mi 5 would be unveiled after the Spring Festival, which falls on Feb. 8 and will last for about 15 days. But in a report by Tech Times, the specific launch date has been revealed coming from new info that emerged on Weibo. It stated that the Xiaomi Mi 5 will be announced on Saturday, Feb 20. A commercial launch will then follow by next day and sales opening a week later after that.

Xiaomi fans are already excited to meet the latest smartphone especially since most of the details of the device were kept under wraps. Fortunately, a few leaks here and there are available, giving customers a heads-up on what may come along with the Mi 5.

According to Android Headlines, the device has been spotted on Geekbench and it revealed that it will come with Qualcomm's latest chipset, the Snapdragon 820. Phone Arena noted that Jiang confirmed this information through his Weibo account.

"The Xiaomi Mi 5 with the latest Snapdragon 820 processor is ready and in volume production. It will be released after the Spring Festival to have enough time for stocking up," said Jiang.

Aside from that, the new handset is said to come with a 5.2-inch QHD or HD display with 1080p resolution and 2.5D curved glass. It's also expected to be equipped with either 3 GB of RAM with 32 GB of storage or 4 GB of RAM with 64 GB of storage.

Gizmo China detailed that the device will be equipped with a 16-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel front camera. It will run with Android marshmallow topped with MIUI7, which is Xiaomi's custom Android skin. Rumors about new features like Hi-Fi Audio, LDAC, and digital noise cancellation are also noted. It may also support USB Type C and come with a fingerprint scanner and NFC connectivity.
