Every first Sunday in October, Christian denominations across the world take part in an ecumenical observance known as World Communion Sunday.

The special day, which focuses on Christian unity, traces its origins to the early 20th century via observances held by churches in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, area.

“With the Second World War came an increased understanding of one’s own mortality, and the spirit of this day caught hold. This day symbolized the effort of bringing the world together, in a spiritual sense,” according to National Today.

“This celebration was adopted in the U.S., in the period during World War II, and soon, the organization, now known as the National Council of Churches, started endorsing and promoting the event to churches worldwide, led by their leader, Jesse Moren Bader.”

Churches observing the occasion will host the sacrament of Holy Communion, which serves as a remembrance of the Last Supper that Jesus shared with His disciples before being crucified.

In honor of this year’s World Communion Sunday observance, here's a list of seven hymns and spiritual songs that are often sung during the partaking of the sacrament of Holy Communion.
