'Facing the Giants' DVD Releasing Amid Success

“Facing the Giants,” a Christian film about a football coach who uplifts his losing team through faith in God, is scheduled for its DVD release on Tuesday.

The film, which was released in theaters late September of 2006, has already accumulated over $10 million from ticket sales, well above the $100,000 that it took to make the movie.

“Facing the Giants” comes at a time when Hollywood is producing more films geared toward family and faith-based audiences, especially after Mel Gibson’s largely successful “The Passion of the Christ” in 2004.

The story centers on the life of a football coach, Grant Taylor, who has never had a winning season in six years. While parents scheme to replace the coach, Taylor also faces problems at home, including the inability to father children, according to his doctor, and a run-down car. Taylor eventually turns to God for help and implements a new faith strategy to drive his football team.

Produced by a local church in Albany, Ga., the movie was picked up by Sony Pictures and shown in 441 theaters across the nation.

According to Sports Illustrated, the church-produced film was picked as one of the most inspirational movies of 2006.

Many churches and other faith-based groups plan to use the DVD as a means for instruction and discipleship within their ministries.

Group packages are being made available.

The DVD will be released nationwide in major retailers such as Wal-Mart, Target and Best Buy as well as some Christian stores.
