12-Year-Old Golfer Record: Ye Wocheng Stuns Golfing World to Qualify for Volvo China Open
A 12-year-old golfer has set a Tour record after becoming the youngest person ever to qualify for the Volvo China Open.
In recent times it has become relatively common for teenage sports stars to hit the upper echelons of their respective sports. However, it has now been reported that pre-teens are making an impact.
Twelve year old Ye Wocheng from Donggaun in the Guangdong province of China hit a two round total of just 142, which was enough to allow him to qualify for a spot in the Volvo China Open, scheduled to start on May 2.
As Wocheng conducted his amazing rounds, golfers at the tournament were left stunned - as at one point the 12 year old was even leading the entire qualifying tournament.
Wocheng shot a four under par 68 on Tuesday, and then left the entire course dumbfounded when he shot four birdies at the start of his second round, moving him to seven under par.
Not everything went the youngster's way, however, and his lack of experience perhaps caught up with him, as he suffered a tougher final nine holes - dropping shots at the 11th and 14th holes.
However, despite scoring an 8 at the 16th hole par 5, he kept his nerve to see out the final few holes and qualify for the Open in May.
Wocheng ended up taking one of just three spots available at the Western China qualifier, and can now look forward to his maiden China Open in a few months time. At the age of just 12, he has decades to improve his game, and is already being touted as being likely to be a star golfer on the PGA tour in the coming years.
