2018 Hyundai Kona SUV Arrives This Summer

Hyundai is set to expand its lineup with the introduction of an all-new subcompact sports utility vehicle (SUV). Named Kona, the upcoming crossover will feature a modern design that reflects the lifestyle and needs of today's consumers.

The South Korean automobile manufacturer's newest addition derived its name from the Kona district in the Big Island of Hawaii. The energetic spirit and unique lifestyle of the residents are said to match the 2018 Hyundai Kona's dynamic character as well as its innovative and practical design. The Kona also follows Hyundai's tradition of naming their vehicles after popular travel destinations.

The 2018 Kona will join Hyundai's three other SUVs — Grand Santa Fe, Santa Fe and Tucson. In terms of size, it will sit beneath the Tucson. Once launched, it is expected to compete with the Nissan Juke, Toyota C-HR, Mazda CX-3 and Honda HR-V.

Design-wise, the 2018 Kona is said to have "true SUV genes" with a bold, striking design and enhanced driving dynamics. The subcompact crossover is also expected to come with premium features and best-in-class interior space.

All these elements are said to work together in order to attract new customers, in line with Hyundai's goal of becoming the leading Asian automotive brand by 2021.

Though specific details remain scarce at this point, Hyundai did release a teaser image which previews the upcoming vehicle's ultra-slim LED headlamp design. The 2018 Kona is said to preview the design language of Hyundai's next-generation SUV models.

The 2018 Hyundai Kona is slated to debut in the summer, specifically sometime in June. It will then go on sale in October. According to reports, the automaker has yet to finalize launch details with executives still considering whether to prioritize a domestic launch in South Korea or a simultaneous international release.

More details regarding the upcoming subcompact crossover's technical specifications, performance numbers and pricing will be announced closer to its official launch date.
