300 Guns Seized From Owner With Illegal Permit (VIDEO)

Police made a shocking discovery when they went to the home of Jay Steiner: more than 300 guns were removed from his home yesterday, police said. Many of the guns were illegal, and Steiner was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon; he is currently free on bail.

Steiner was arrested after an undercover officer visited his home on Long Island. Police were concerned that Steiner may have been operating a gun business and providing the illegal weapons to anyone who happened to want one, without going through the proper channels.

"The guns were stored all throughout the house," Suffolk District Attorney Thomas Spota told NBC News. "He had more firepower than the detectives who arrested him."

Police confiscated 85 illegal handguns as well as 230 rifles and shotguns, not to mention the thousands of rounds of ammunition. Steiner once had a proper federal gun license to buy and sell the weapons, but it expired eight years ago. Since then, it is likely that he has been operating illegally out of his home.

Police were also concerned due to the fact that Steiner lived close to a school. It's unknown whether or not he sold to minors, and police are running checks on all the weapons to see if any have been used in a crime.

Steiner was released on bail but is due back in court next month, police said. The case is a bit different than that of a California man whose 100 gun stash caused police to be alarmed and remove the weapons from his home.

The man was initially arrested for exposing himself in Wal-Mart, and when police went to serve him with a warrant, they discovered the incredible amount of weapons and took him into custody. He was taken to a psychiatric facility for evaluation, while police took all the weapons out of the home.

According to the Pasadena Star-News, the psychiatric evaluation will determine whether or not the man has his guns returned.
