36th Annual GMA Dove Awards Wrap-Up
Switchfoot and The Crabb Family highlight gospel music's diversity as the evening's big winners
NASHVILLE, Tenn. April 14, 2005 The 36th Annual Dove Awards ended last night in beautiful celebration of the diversity and unity within todays Gospel music scene, with San Diego alt rockers Switchfoot and southern gospels Kentucky-bred The Crabb Family taking home the ceremonys highest honors.
Switchfoot, who were surprisingly absent from the ceremony, earned a total of 4 awards including the events premier prize, the Dove for Artist of the Year. The bands breakthrough hit, Dare You to Move, was honored for Rock/Contemporary Song of the Year with the music video for the song also winning a Dove in the category of Short Form Music Video of the Year. The groups concert DVD Switchfoot Live In San Diego also earned the band a statuette for Long Form Music Video.
The Crabb Family also took home 4 Doves, winning in the categories of Southern Gospel Album of the Year for their critically acclaimed recording Driven as well as Southern Gospel Recorded Song of the Year for He Came Looking for Me, Country Recorded Song of the Year for Forever, and Traditional Gospel Recorded Song of the Year for Through the Fire, a song which also features gospel artist Donnie McClurkin.
''To God be all the glory. I'm proud of every one of you tonight and what we represent and who we're singing about,'' said Crabb Family patriarch and principal songwriter Gerald Crabb.
Other multiple winners of the night were pop band Casting Crowns, gospel worship artist Israel & New Breed, and singer/songwriters Jeremy Camp and Nicole C. Mullen. (A complete list of winners can be found below).
I love the fact that Switchfoot and The Crabb Family share top Dove Award honors this year because it powerfully reveals the variety of cultural expressions of the Gospel through music, said President of the Gospel Music Association (GMA) and executive producer of the 36th Annual GMA Music Awards. These two groups could not be more different culturally and musitcally and yet, the message of the Gospel is evident in both of them. Casting Crowns, Jeremy Camp, Nicole C. Mullen and Israel & New Breed share with Switchfoot and The Crabb Family the unique ability to create music that reaches across cultural, religious and generational divides to encourage the gospel music faithful and inspire a newer generation of music fans.
While honored by their accolades, many of the artists took time to remind both their fans and their colleagues of the greater reward that comes through serving God and the Christian community.
''This right here cannot be what makes you or breaks you,'' Mullen, who won the Dove for Female Vocalist of the Year for the second consecutive time, said. ''If you're called by Jesus Christ, if you're hired by him, then nobody can fire you. We believe we're called by him, whether somebody else recognizes you or not. My reward in heaven is way greater than this.''
Songs come and go and styles come and go, but the church will always be there,'' said Casting Crowns front man Mark Hall, who said that hell remain a pastor during and beyond his musical career. I believe the church is where our talent belongs.''
The 36th Annual GMA Music Awards, which were hosted by top artists Houghton, Darlene Zschech, Steven Curtis Chapman, Rebecca St. James, CeCe Winans, and Smokie Norful, featured performances by Casting Crowns, who ended the evening with their award-winning cut Who Am I, The Crabb Family, Kierra Kiki Sheard, Selah, J Moss, Barlow Girl, Bethany Dillon, Natalie Grant, Watermark, Chris Tomlin, David Crowder Band, Matt Redman, who led the crowd in a worship medley that featured Worship Song of the Year Blessed Be Your Name, Tonéx, Skillet, and Denver and the Mile High Orchestra, who were the events house band.
