4 takeaways from Trump virtual town hall: more economic aid, defending gov’t response
Is Trump bringing America together?
Baier asked Trump, in light of criticism over his divisive rhetoric during the coronavirus pandemic, if the president thought he was doing a good job of bringing the nation together.
Trump responded that he believed he was bringing the country together through “winning very big,” arguing that “I think that winning ultimately is going to bring this country together.”
“I’m shocked that during a crisis it could be so partisan,” said Trump, denouncing congressional committees that he believed were “looking for trouble” and nothing more.
He believed that “in one sense, we have great unity” and expressed his hope that Democrats in Congress and other critics of his administration “are going to come along” eventually.
A woman from New Jersey who said she prayed for the president everyday asked why Trump could not be more respectful to the press and ideological enemies in general.
“I am greeted with a hostile press, the likes of which no president has ever seen,” responded Trump. “They say nobody got treated worse than Lincoln. I believe I am treated worse.”
“I feel that if I was kind to them, I’d be walked off the stage. They come at you with the most horrible, horrendous, biased questions and you see it.”
