First female, LGBT-identified LA fire chief prioritized DEI

The Palisades fire, already one of the most devastating in the area’s history, broke out under the administration of LAFD Chief Kristin Crowley, who, according to the LAFD, is its first female and LGBT-identified fire chief ever.

Crowley, who was tapped for the role in March 2022, oversees about 3,400 sworn personnel and more than 350 civilians serving about 4 million people citywide. Prior to being named as chief, Crowley served as a battalion commander for nine years, overseeing several divisions.

According to the LAFD, Crowley’s priorities include “creating, supporting, and promoting a culture that values diversity, inclusion, and equity while striving to meet and exceed the expectations of the communities.”

Crowley also served as the grand marshal of the 2024 LA pride parade.
