5 Dead in IL Shooting, Suspect in Custody After Shootout With Police

A shooting in Illinois has left five people dead, one injured, and schools in the area canceled or on lockdown for the day. Last night a shooter killed five people in the small town of Manchester, Ill., which is minutes away from the state capital of Springfield.

Police searched overnight for the suspect and ordered that all schools in the surrounding towns be closed in order to protect students and parents alike. They confirmed to multiple news outlets that the suspect is in official custody but has not released.

"He shot his family," Winchester resident Donna Dawes told The Christian Post exclusively. "He's been taken to the hospital, so he's obviously injured," she added. "They haven't released his name just yet, and police will give more detail at a later press conference."

Winchester is one of the towns that was on lockdown. Police managed to capture the suspect after a high-speed pursuit and an exchange of gunfire, WLDS reported. At least one of those injured in the shooting was a child, who was taken to a hospital in Springfield.

Residents are applauding police for their fast action and capture of the suspect overnight, much like the residents of Boston cheered for law enforcement after the capture of the second bombing suspect.

"I live in Winchester, and I must say that the law enforcement did an excellent job! Thank you!" Brittany Stice posted on Facebook.

An official press conference has been arranged for 10 a.m. CST/11 a.m. EST. The Christian Post will continue to follow the story with more information.
