5 Die in Car Crash in Burbank, California; 1 Survivor Found Crawling From Blaze (VIDEO)
Five people have died in a car crash in Burbank, California on Saturday after a car spun out of control and burst into flames in a dramatic road accident.
Officials have confirmed that the incident took place on Saturday morning, and that passengers in the car were trapped as the blaze engulfed the vehicle.
Firefighter attended the scene and assisted the coroner's office to remove the bodies of the victims, which were described as "burned beyond recognition."
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner has said that they will use fingerprints and dental records to try and find the identity of the victims. However, exactly how they tackle each victim will depend on how badly the body has been burned, according to The Associated Press.
Of all the people in the vehicle, only one made it out alive. An 18 year old woman was found crawling away from the burning Nissan around 50 yards away when police arrived just after 4 a.m. local time. It is believed she was thrown from the vehicle, according to ABC 7 News.
The survivor is said to have suffered a broken leg, and was taken to hospital for further treatment, although her injuries are said to be non-life-threatening. Her family has been attending at her bedside.
Fire Battalion Chief Ron Barone has told AP that paramedics who helped the woman believed they smelled alcohol on her breath, however, authorities have not yet been able to confirm whether drugs or alcohol had any part to play in the tragedy. Officials did confirm, however, that the survivor was not the driver of the car. They also said they believed speed could have been a factor in the crash.
The vehicle reportedly burst into flames after it hit a guardrail near an I-5 off-ramp, and smashed into a freeway pillar behind.
