5. A 'terrible sequel' to Kavanaugh battle
As the coverage unfolded, some conservatives suggested the episode was reminiscent of Justice Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation battle.
In an essay titled "Covington Catholic Is the Terrible Sequel to the Kavanaugh Case" in the National Review Tuesday, David French explained that in the case of the newest Supreme Court justice "conservative men and women looked at decades-old, uncorroborated allegations, the unquestioning acceptance of those claims, and the furious effort to destroy a man’s reputation and career — even by passing along the wildest and most implausible claims — and thought, 'That could be me' or 'that could be my husband.'
"This isn’t just a media scandal. When we see the hate, some of us see our sons, and we know that in America today, their futures, their reputations, and — given the prevalence of death threats — perhaps even their very lives are in the hands of an angry mob."
Comparisons of Nick Sandmann to Brett Kavanaugh as memes juxtaposing their smiling faces as evidence of invincible "white privilege" were shared around social media.
Conservative writer Bethany Mandel, an orthodox Jew, tweeted: "Between the Kavanaugh debacle and now what happened with these MAGA boys, there’s a lot of nervous boy moms and dads out there. If they can and will seek to destroy these guys, they’ll come after yours."
In a follow-up tweet, French thanked those who responded to his words "with some variation of, "Conservative women shouldn't marry rapists or raise racists."
"You made my point. You've taken uncorroborated, contradicted, and selectively-edited accusations as gospel. That's not to your credit," he said.
Joy Behar was brutally honest on "The View" Tuesday when she said the reason why the media attacked the Covington students was because they are "desperate to get Trump out of office."
