5 godly and not-so-godly moments from Super Bowl LVIII
Rapper Ice Spice causes a stir on social media
While pop star Taylor Swift has dominated — some might say even detracted from — coverage of the Chiefs amid her relationship with tight end Travis Kelce, it was one of the guests in her luxury suite that also caused a stir on social media.
The Allegiant Stadium jumbotron showed Swift chugging her drink. While in the background in Swift's suite, the rapper, whose real name is Isis Naija Gaston, reacted to the camera by making what some claimed were horned devil signs with both hands and holding up her cross necklace, which some believed to be an inverted or satanic cross.
The video of the moment was shared in a tweet by the NFL's account — amassing over 16 million views as of Monday morning.
The stir on social media was enough for Snopes.com to look into the claims that "Rapper Ice Spice wore an upside-down 'satanic' cross at the 2024 Super Bowl," rating the claim a "mixture" of truth and falsity.
"The pendant, designed by New York jeweler Alex Moss, does appear to be in the shape of an inverted (upside-down) cross, but there is nothing inherently 'demonic' or 'satanic' about it," the website claimed. "In the Catholic tradition, the inverted cross represents the martyrdom of St. Peter and is called the Cross of St. Peter."
"We found higher-resolution images of Spice at the Super Bowl in which her pendant appears to be a Greek (equal-armed) cross, rather than an inverted one, although according to TMZ and other sources, the piece, designed by Alex Moss, was indeed an upside-down — though not 'satanic' — cross."
Others on social media also pointed out Gaston was wearing a Balenciaga top despite the brand facing backlash in 2022 for an ad campaign that featured "disturbing images" of children.
