Reaching back again into history, Putin noted how Vladimir the Great's baptism in 988 began the Russian people's "lengthy process from pagans to Christians," and said Eastern Orthodoxy "deeply rooted itself in the consciousness of the Russian people."
Even as Russia expanded over the centuries to encompass peoples of other religions, Putin said "Russian authorities were always very careful about the culture and religion of those people who came into the Russian Empire."
Putin also asserted that he finds it "very easy" to justify violence "when it comes to protecting oneself and one's family, one's homeland."
When Carlson asked him if he believes supernatural forces are moving in world affairs, Putin was skeptical.
"No, to be honest. I don't think so," he said, adding that he believes there are "inherent laws" that govern humanity and that nations have been subject to them throughout history.
