5 Jesus statues to see around the world
5. Cristo Rei, Lisbon, Portugal
The Cristo Rei overlooks the city of Lisbon, Portugal, and was also inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue after Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon took a trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The statue was built between the years 1959–1969 in Portugal. It was funded and supported by Apostleship of Prayer members and is meant to represent a token of gratitude by the Portuguese people for being protected during World War II.
Cristo Rei is located on a cliff over the Tagus River and is 92 feet tall and stands on a 269-feet tall pedestal formed by four arches and a flat platform.
The only way to get to the statue is by boat. The grounds of the Cristo Rei features a number of gardens with religious themes. At the base of the monument is the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Paz.
