2. Phillips is Jewish
The Pew Research Center identified Phillips as one of 33 Jews serving in Congress in its report titled Faith on the Hill: The religious composition of the 118th Congress. The American Jewish World View elaborated on Phillips’ Jewish faith in a 2018 article published as he was campaigning for Congress for the first time.
In addition to identifying Phillips as a member of the board of the Minneapolis-based synagogue Temple Israel, the article detailed how the then-candidate served as co-chair of the Jay and Rose Phillips Family Foundation and featured a quote from the future lawmaker describing the influence of the Jewish faith on the philanthropic organization: “While we share with countless organizations well beyond the Jewish community, we use our Jewish values to illuminate our philanthropy every single day.”
