55-Year-Old Cheerleader Aims to Make Dallas Cowboys' Squad
A grandmother in Texas is hoping to fulfill her childhood dream of becoming a member of the National Football League's Dallas Cowboys cheerleading squad.
Sharon Simmons, 55, took the first step towards her dream last Saturday when she partook in the team's first tryout along with hundreds of other hopefuls at the Cowboys stadium in Arlington.
"I thought about this when I was about 22 years old," Simmons told The Dallas Morning News. "I was a single mom, and I wanted to do it."
But Simmons had to put her dream on hold while she tried to raise and support a family. She kept busy over the next 33 years. She was able to write her book "Triple F: Fifty, Fit and Fabulous," become a model and fitness instructor and also earn her commercial real estate license.
"With me, it has been about the journey," Simmons said. "It literally has been about the journey. I've met incredible people; I've learned so many new things."
She is also learning to become an actress and will appear on TNT's "Dallas," which shoots in the local area.
Simmons has also been accustomed to success when it comes to her fitness competitions. She entered her first competition at the age of 50 and has since go on to win nine out of the 20 competitions that she has entered, according to Fox News.
"I don't see a number… If I do, it's just a number. It's not that I can't keep up with [younger women] in the physical part of the training," she said.
If Simmons does manage to make the team, she will become the oldest cheerleader in the league. She will however, be another grandmother in the league.
Suzie Sanchez, 37, of the Oakland Raiders is a grandma, and Laura Vikmanis of the Cincinnati Bengals is currently the oldest NFL cheerleader at 42.
