7-Eleven Free Slurpee Day 2012
Wednesday has arrived with 7-Eleven's unofficial birthday, so free slurpees are being offered to customers.
7-Eleven, the largest convenience store chain in the nation, is celebrating 7/11/12 by handing out 7.11 fluid ounce Slurpees from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today.
"Stop by a participating 7-Elven store and pick up your FREE 7.11 oz. Slurpee drink," the company wrote on their Facebook page. "Maybe nibble on a birthday donut while you're there. And make a wish or something."
On Twitter, Slurpee lovers everywhere are posting their excitement over 7-Eleven's birthday celebrations.
"Can't wait to get my free slurpee today," wrote Kelly.
Nate posted, "Yeah buddy! I'm all about that Slurpee life today!"
Bee wrote, "I might hit a couple 7-11's for free slurpees if today is as hot as yesterday was."
While Free Slurpee Day benefits customers, the giveaway also benefits for the company. Last year, it was reported that 7-Eleven's birthday celebrations resulted in 4.5 million of the sweet, flavored-slush drinks making it into the hands of its customers. In the end though, the day's sales went up by an incredible 38 percent, according to USA Today.
7-Eleven was founded in 1927 in Dallas, Texas and became well known for their 24-hour service which began in 1962. Today, the convenience store has locations across the world, including over 8,200 in the U.S. alone.
After licensing the ICEE product in 1967, 7-Eleven began selling their signature Slurpee. A video on the product's website, slurpee.com, states that the beverage was created in Kansas when Omar Knedilk dealt with a broken soda fountain by serving soda that he had frozen to this customers.
The company has become a cultural icon that has been parodied in the television series "The Simpsons" and "Beavis and Butt-head" as well as in the "Grand Theft Auto" video game series.
