Biden used his address to condemn "the big lie," referring to the idea that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from former President Donald Trump via voter fraud.
He characterized it as leading to several instances where "our democracy has been threatened and attacked, put at risk."
In addition to the Jan. 6, 2021, storming of the U.S. Capitol, he listed the "big lie" as the cause of "political violence" at the home of then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi last October.
Biden informed the audience that "here tonight in this chamber is the man who bears the scars of that brutal attack but is as tough and as strong and as resilient as they get, my friend Paul Pelosi."
The man arrested for the attack, David DePape, compiled a series of blog posts over the summer decrying the "elites/ruling class" and "censorship," leading some observers to conclude that he sympathized with the concerns about federal government overreach that many supporters of former President Donald Trump subscribe to.
Independent journalist Michael Shellenberger reported that DePape "lived with a notorious local nudist in a Berkeley home, complete with a Black Lives Matter sign in the window and an LGBT rainbow flag, emblazoned with a marijuana symbol, hanging from a tree." One of DePape's neighbors portrayed him and his family as "very radical activists."
