Huntsman is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, having done missionary work in Taiwan in his youth.

However, Huntsman has come under fire from some who believe that he is not devout, drawing from comments he made to assorted publications including Time magazine, where he said in 2011, "I'm a very spiritual person" instead of religious, adding he was "proud of my Mormon roots."

This assessment was also based in part off of an interview he gave to Vogue in 2011, wherein he described his family background as having "saloon keepers and rabble rousers" on his father's and "ministers and proselytizers" on his mother's side.

"We blend a couple of different cultures in this family," explained Huntsman to Vogue.
