Harriette runs to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and has raised $100,000. She has run the marathon every year since 1999. She only missed it once in 2013 because she was diagnosed with cancer and was in radiation treatment. She has a heart of gold, and proves that each and every time she gets out there to compete. The former record holder, Gladys Burrill, ran the 2010 Honolulu Marathon in 9:53:16 at 92 years and 19 days old. She was 74 days younger than Thompson is right now.
She lost both parents, three brothers and her husband to cancer, so this cause is very close to her heart. Harriette completed the race alongside her son Benny. Toward the end of the race at mile 21, she struggled. But she was able to gain her composure and finish like a champion!
