A Rushing Wind
Acts 2:1-4 (NRSV)
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

LIVING in the mountains allows me to enjoy soul-restoring walks in the forest. Late in the afternoon, the wind often rushes through the treetops in sudden gusts. As I watch the forest creatures, I observe their varied reactions to the wind. The deer try to find shelter, hiding from it. The porcupines simply waddle along, ignoring it. The birds, however, use the wind to soar higher on swirling air currents.
In the Book of Acts, the coming of the Holy Spirit to the church on the day of Pentecost is described as a "violent wind." As believers in Christ, we are given the gift of the Holy Spirit who has the power to comfort us, convict us, empower us, and intercede for us. Just as the forest creatures react to the wind differently, each of us has a choice in how we respond to the Holy Spirit in our lives.
When I allow the Holy Spirit to guide my thoughts and actions, I sense God's power lifting my vision to see the needs of others more clearly. God empowers me to collect food for the hungry, write a note to a discouraged friend, or share the love of Christ with those who feel unloved.
Prayer: God of grace and glory, thank you for giving us your Holy Spirit. Help us to rely on the Spirit's power every day as we seek to know you better. Amen.
