'A Series of Unfortunate Events' Latest News: Season 3 Production Begins Without Daniel Handler?

The cast of "A Series of Unfortunate Events" (ASOUE) is back on the set for season 3 even as the second season has not yet aired on Netflix. ASOUE creator and the show's head writer, Daniel Handler, however, said he's no longer actively involved in the third season.

"A Series of Unfortunate Events" held its first table read days before Halloween. The show's official social media accounts confirmed the cast back at work for season 3 in a photo post.

Netflix quietly renewed the show for a third season in April or just a month after confirming season 2. Speculations about the consecutive renewals might have something to do with the lead characters' ages.

Young actors Malina Weissman and Louis Hynes, who play the Baudelaire children Violet and Klaus, are in the midst of puberty and are physically changing. The show would have to simultaneously film both seasons for the sake of continuity as the book version of Violet and Klaus barely aged.

Meanwhile, Handler told Boston Globe he's less involved with "A Series of Unfortunate Events" season 3. Netflix apparently asked Handler to take a step back after having finished writing the scripts for the whole series.

"I'm less involved because they asked me to be less involved," Handler said. "It wasn't my idea," the best-selling author explained, adding he got an e-mail about being told he's no longer needed in the show's production.

In the meantime, Netflix has not yet announced the premiere date nor released teasers of "A Series of Unfortunate Events" season 2. The first season arrived on the platform in January 2017 and it's likely Netflix will follow the same time schedule for the next installment.

"A Series of Unfortunate Events" also stars Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf and Patrick Warburton as Lemony Snicket. The show is based on the classic children's book series Handler published from 1999 to 2006 with 13 books.
