A Simple Truth
Their delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law they meditate day and night. They are like trees planted by streams of water. Psalm 1:2-3 (NRSV)
AFTER I left college for work, marriage, and children, my former passion, vision, and sense of God's nearness faded. They didn't disappear suddenly; they left gradually. I thought this was the inevitable influence of people and circumstances in life. It seemed the romance I shared with God in my younger days simply couldn't happen in "grown-up life."
I sensed a difference in myself; slowly I was becoming someone who didn't experience God in a way that made a difference in how I live. Then one day I began to read the Bible aloud to calm my fussy baby. I continued reading long after she was asleep, stunned and ashamed to think of the months that had passed since I had read any sizeable portion of scripture. My insides began stirring as I compared the memory of what my relationship with God used to be with what it had become.
I rediscovered God that day. God had not been failing me; rather, I had chosen to ignore God. I remembered a simple truth: God speaks to us through scripture.
