'A Star is Born' Eyes Tom Cruise to Star With Beyonce
The upcoming remake of "A Star is Born" has tapped Tom Cruise to star alongside Beyonce Knowles, according to reports Monday.
Cruise's appearance as a rock star in the upcoming musical "Rock of Ages" makes him a qualified actor for the part in the hit film's remake.
"A Star is Born" tells the story of a movie star who helps a young singer and actress find fame as his own career plummets because of aging and alcoholism. The film's 1954 cast included Judy Garland, James Mason, and Jack Carson.
Hollywood sources revealed that Cruise has two other projects lined up before he could begin working on "A Star is Born," and that no negotiations have taken place, according to Daily Variety.
The "Mission: Impossible" star would play Beyonce's onscreen troubled mentor. Director Clint Eastwood and the production studio behind the film are also considering Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, and Hugh Jackman for the role.
Eastwood's remake will mark the fourth time "A Star is Born" will have been recycled. The first movie was released in 1937 and starred Janet Gaynor, and in addition to the 1954 version with Garland, the third film was released in 1976 and starred Barbara Streisand.
The romantic and dramatic musical already has award-winning singer Beyonce to represent modern talent in the remake. As mystery still surrounds who will play opposite of her, the buzz around the film continues on Twitter.
Users are discussing who will play the older star who loses his appeal and turns to alcohol as he becomes jealous of his younger counterpart's success.
"A remake of 'A Star is Born' coming, this time with Tom Cruise and Beyonce," Todd wrote. "Hardly Thanksgiving yet and I already smell a turkey. #boxoffice."
"Tom Cruise may star with Beyonce in the 'A Star is Born' remake: terrible idea?" Eva posted on her Twitter account Tuesday.
"Really Tom," wrote the parody account names after the actor's daughter, Suri Cruise. "A movie with Beyonce? Do you ever do anything that doesn't embarrass or emotionally scar me?"
"A Star is Born" will likely begin production later this year.
