Kermit Gosnell is not an 'outlier,' pro-life advocates warn; others are killing babies born alive
Cesare Santangelo
On March 25, Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising Co-Founders Terrisa Bukovinac and Lauren Handy obtained the remains of 115 babies aborted at Dr. Cesare Santangelo’s Washington Surgi-Clinic in Washington, D.C. While 110 of the babies looked as if they were aborted during the first trimester, five of them appeared to have been nearly full-term when they were killed.
Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust Executive Director AJ Hurley was present when Bukovinac and Handy opened the containers filled with aborted babies, assisting with documenting the discovery. In an interview with The Christian Post, Hurley explained why the babies’ remains suggest the abortion methods used to kill them were illegal.
Baby Harriet’s — named this by PAAU — skull had been “completely” snipped and suctioned out. According to Hurley, this type of trauma is reminiscent of a partial-birth abortion, which constitutes a violation of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003.
Another recovered baby, named Christopher X, was almost full-term. Hurley contended that an autopsy is necessary to determine if he had taken his “first breath,” noting the pinkness of the baby’s skin.
The pro-life activist said Phoenix, another one of the recovered babies, was still inside the amniotic sac. He speculated that if the sac was still intact, Phoenix might have been delivered alive and left to die inside the clinic.
In a joint letter, 18 Republican senators and five Republican House representatives called on D.C. authorities to launch a "thorough investigation" into the clinic.
WUSA9 reports that the medical examiner's office had declared that the five fetuses all appear to have been aborted in accordance with D.C. law and that the clinic at the center of the allegations was not flagged for any significant compliance issues by health inspectors in the last five years.
Santangelo has previously been accused of leaving born-alive infants to die at his facility. As Hurley noted, in a 2012 undercover Live Action investigation, Santangelo was caught on camera saying he does not provide medical care to infants who survive abortions.
