Adam Levine Talks Controversial Comments: I 'Say Things That P--- People Off'

'The Voice' Coach Said He 'Hates This Country' in May, But Explained it as 'Frustration'

Adam Levine addressed his feelings Saturday about when the Maroon 5 frontman muttered "I hate this country" under his breath during a taping of "The Voice." The singer said that the controversy surrounding his offhand comment was "stupid media hype" because he doesn't really have anti-American sentiments.

Adam Levine's comment was brought up during the Television Critics Association press tour, which reunited original "Voice" coaches Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and host Carson Daly. Levine discussed his disparaging remark, but was not eager to do so, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"Ugh, really?" Levine said after a reporter asked him about the incident.

"Everyone makes mistakes. If your intentions are good and someone misunderstands you, regardless of what the scenario is, I think people can see through stupid media hype. No offense," he said. "I think that as long as you allow yourself to be who you are, you can't really defend every single thing you say, and you can't worry about saying the wrong thing, you just have to say what you're going to say and stand behind it."

"It's part of my personality to say things that piss people off," the 34-year-old musician added, with other "Voice" personalities chiming in that the show isn't "scripted."

After the remark was caught by cameras in May, Levine issued a statement, saying the comment was "made purely out of frustration"- two of his contestants had been eliminated because of viewers' votes. He also attempted to quell the furor with sarcasm, tweeting the definitions for "joke," "humorless," "lighthearted" and "misunderstand."

Levine has also been busy with his very first film "Can A Song Save Your Life?" and while on set, his girlfriend-turned-fianceé, Namibian Victoria's Secret model Behati Prinsloo, paid him a visit. The 24-year-old appeared in a floral print shirt and denims while Levine sported a beard for the part.

Levine returned to Prinsloo after one year apart and during that time he dated another Victoria's Secret model, Nina Agdal.
