Adam Yauch Dies of 'Very Treatable' Cancer? Beastie Boys Rapper Diagnosed in 2009
Adam Yauch reportedly died on Friday after struggling from cancer. While those close to the Beastie Boys rapper were aware of his condition, initial reports had stated that the cancer was "very treatable."
It was first revealed in 2009 that Adam Yauch, also known as MCA, was diagnosed with cancer. The band, currently on tour at the time, was forced to cancel the rest of their tour dates, but little concern was raised because the condition was considered treatable.
"Beastie Boy Adam Yauch (pronounced yawk) has what is described as a 'very treatable' cancerous tumor in his salivary gland," the Associated Press first reported in August of 2009.

A statement concerning the rapper's condition confirmed that a tumor had been discovered in Yauch's salivary gland. The condition was considered "very treatable" because it was contained to only one area and did not appear to be growing. Doctor's also believed that the condition had been caught very early on.
Humans are born with three salivary glands, and the best form of treatment is considered removal of the affected gland. Most cases of tumors within the salivary glands are considered easy to treat and remove.
"He will need surgery and other treatment, but the statement says his vocal cords will not be affected," the initial report concerning Yauch read.
Yauch's condition, however, appeared to have been more complicated than expected. The rapper went through an ongoing battle with the condition until his death, at 47, which was announced on Friday.
Little has been revealed as to what caused Yauch's cancer to spread.
