Adele's Driving Instructor Didn't Recognize Her, Even After She Sang

Adele's driving instructor failed to recognize the songstress during her lessons until she started singing to him, and even then, he still didn't really know who she was. The "Rolling In The Deep" singer plans on becoming a racecar driver on reality show "Top Gear," but before she could do that, she had to take her driving test.

Adele's driving instructor, Noel Gaughan, specializes in week-long intensive driving courses that have attracted various celebrities over the years. The 46-year-old said he prefers BBC Radio 4 to television, though, which is why he didn't recognize Adele, who has sold over 32 million albums, has won nine Grammys, and is one of the most famous singers in the U.K.

"I didn't know who Adele was so she started singing in her lessons. The problem is I didn't know any of her songs," he told The Telegraph. "She would sing some beautiful songs and say, 'You must know this one,' but I don't really know many celebrities."

Gaughan's unawareness of different celebrities is surprising, given his reputation for attracting famous pupils. He has taught actors James McAvoy and Rhys Ifans, and went through a similar incident with One Direction singer Niall Horan.

"I was teaching Niall from One Direction and I just thought he was an ordinary lad. But wherever we pulled over there were girls taking pictures and surrounding the car. That made it difficult," the 46-year-old Hertfordshire resident said.

Nevertheless, Adele was unfazed about not being recognized, as Gaughan said it is her "dream" to be on "Top Gear."

"I passed my driving test this morning!" Adele tweeted Oct. 11, and the driving instructor confirmed that she was a "gifted driver" who only made one small mistake in their week together.

"Noel is Dumbledore of roads," Adele wrote in a testimonial for his VIP driving school website. "Could not have done it without him and his jokes changed my life."
